Things To Know Before Taking A Pilates Class

Taking a new fitness class can be intimidating but finding new, fun workouts even if that means trendy workouts can be what you need to spice up your fitness routine. When I looked up Pilates online and saw the reformer with its straps and springs, I was equally thinking, “what the f* is that?!” and “oooh, I have to try that out!”

Pilates is a low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen your muscles, improve your posture and flexibility with moves that tend to target your core 90% of the time while also working the rest of your body. Other low-impact workouts include: Bikram, Yoga, and Barre.

TWO DIFFERENT PILATES CLASSES: REFORMER CLASSES & MAT CLASSES

A pilates class can either be tackled on a machine called a reformer, which is a sliding platform complete with stationary foot bar, springs and pulleys to provide resistance. Another pilates class version is one that is based on a thicker-than-yoga-mat to cushion pressure points.

If you’re looking for a more fun experience, using the reformer will definitely be a better option for you. Luckily for me, in my first try at Pilates my trainer gave me an all-around session so I could experience everything.

SO MANY TOYS!

If you’re like me and kinda like a workout challenge, or at least things that look completely different than what you are used to, you may also love the fact that there are so many other pieces of equipment used in different Pilates classes. Some of the most common pieces include a Wunda (a low chair with padding and springs), a Pilates spring board (goes against the wall with many gadgets for a full-body workout) and the magic circle usually used between your legs to create resistance.

YOU WILL BE SORE

Many people still think that your workouts must be high level intensity the whole time to feel the burn but with Pilates you’ll quickly realize that slow but focused moves will also leave you sore. Great option for beginners or for those looking for low-impact workouts, Pilates will help you lose fat while primarily strengthening your core… and making you stronger overall.

DON’T FORGET YOUR GRIP SOCKS

Most Pilates classes will require you wear grip socks. There are some, like these which I loved, made specifically for Pilates (and yoga if you’d like) but you can also get away with regular grip socks you may already own.

FORM FITTING OUTFIT

Even if you prefer to wear loose fitting clothes, for Pilates I would highly recommend a form fitting outfit. This way your clothes doesn’t get stuck in the springs or other equipment and your trainer can also better see your form and correct you if necessary.

I also suggest no shorts. With so many movements, sometimes your legs high up in the air and open-legged circles, you don’t want to have to worry about what you may have out on display.

MAKE PILATES PART OF A WELL-ROUNDED FITNESS PLAN

Pilates main goal is to stretch, strengthen and align your body. With that said, it’s an excellent complement to other fitness activities because it will make you better. Adding pilates to a well-rounded fitness plan can help make you faster and stronger in boxing, help you lift heavier weights, and even run faster.
